GINKS - Green Inclinations, No Kids |
|
GINK stands for "Green Inclinations, No Kids" and is a green play on the "Double Income, No Kids" acronym, DINK, that came about during the American yuppie boom in the 1980s.
Studies show that having one child increases your carbon footprint by a factor of six. If you consider not just the carbon impact of your own kids but of your kids' kids and so on, the numbers get even starker. Each child adds an estimated 9,441 metric tons of CO2 to a parent's carbon legacy—that's about 5.7 times his or her direct lifetime emissions.
The dictionary defines 'gink' as a slang a man or boy, esp. one seen as odd. GINK is radical, powerful, extreme. Going child-free is a profoundly personal choice, one that's not typically encouraged in our society. Many married couples plan on starting a family over the course of their marriage. But what about couples who have chosen to not have children? Society still expects people to become parents and those who choose not to are often labelled as "selfish", "unnatural" and deficient in some other way. Rather than view themselves as "childless", which implies that they are lacking children, many would rather refer to themselves as "childfree", as they have made the conscious decision to not become parents. Apart from the lower carbon footprint, the other obvious benefits are:
Less taxes
Less rent
Less clutter
No need for day care/baby sitter
No school/college fees
Less responsibility
More me time
A recent study at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (and reported in ScienceDaily.com) examined nearly 6,000 women and provided an unexpected answer: HAVING children didn't impact a couple's (or a woman's) happiness so much as WHEN the child was had. The rest of this space will be populated with readers feedback. Send your comments to sharad@go-green.ae
